OPPORTUNITY AND OVERVIEW:
The University of Nebraska System’s Office of External Relations is seeking a Copywriting Intern for an internship spanning early 2025 through the 2025-26 academic year (January/February ’25 through May ’26) and potentially beyond. The intern will report to the Assistant Director of Marketing and assist with copywriting projects for print, digital and web use. The internship is scheduled to begin at or closely following the start of the spring 2025 semester.
ABOUT EXTERNAL RELATIONS:
The Office of External Relations at the University of Nebraska System oversees strategic communications and marketing, events, and state and federal government relations for the university system (UNK, UNL, UNMC and UNO) and Office of the President—promoting positive relations and
outcomes between the university and its many constituents. The Office of External Relations is located in Varner Hall, across from UNL’s East Campus in Lincoln.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Writing and scheduling social media posts for the NU System and presidential social media accounts
• Creating short- and long-form written content for marketing and web initiatives including print, digital, web and paid media campaigns
• Assisting with development of written assets for internal and external communications including email responses to university constituents, email newsletters, event scripts and materials, internal announcements, and external news releases and advisories as needed
• Assist with other marketing and communications projects, project management, written material and initiatives as needed for teams across the Office of External Relations (Government Relations, Events, Communications and Marketing).
• Assist with events put on by the Office of External Relations as needed
REQUIREMENTS:
• We look to recruit a junior, senior or graduate student at an NU System campus in order to ensure expertise and experience in their field of study. Please note that the internship may extend beyond the student’s junior or senior year.
• Students with majors in advertising, public relations, marketing, journalism, English or other relevant fields will be given strong preference
• Previous copywriting or marketing internship experience is preferred, but not required
SKILLS:
• Experience developing written content for social media platforms (X, Facebook, LinkedIn)
• Experience writing short- and long-form content for web use (webpages, blogs, etc.)
• Familiarity with public relations writing, including news releases
• Strong knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and to produce content in a fast-paced environment
• Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a wide range of individuals
• Availability to work up to 20 hours per week at Varner Hall in Lincoln (and over student holidays, if desired)
HOURS: Monday thru Friday, in-person, with flexibility around class schedule
SALARY: $15.00/hour
