Happening at the National level

The Legislative Issues Committee continues to follow developments that could impact advertising and communication decisions locally. Here is recent coverage following the latest on the FCC’s internet privacy ruling, initially advanced in October 2016 under the Obama administration and statements issued by industry leaders as this ruling positions for repeal under the Trump administration.

Ad Industry Lobbies Against ‘Confusing’ Broadband Privacy Order
March 13, 2017

Earlier in March, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) and Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee) introduced legislation to rescind the rules under that act. If Congress moves forward with a resolution of disapproval, the FCC won’t be allowed to replace the privacy rules with new regulations.

Advertisers urge Congress to roll back internet privacy rule
The advertising industry is calling on Congress to eliminate the Federal Communications Commission’s privacy rules on internet providers.

Recap: March brought industry engagements to the forefront

AAF Omaha, in partnership with AAF Lincoln, hosted a Legislative Meet ‘n Greet session with Nebraska lawmakers on Thursday, March 2, 2017 in Lincoln, Neb. The event drew more than 20 lawmakers together with AAF leadership and members for an evening of dialogue and lobbying for a “creative Nebraska.” AAF leaders shared information packets highlighting the economic impact advertising revenue has on the state, as well as high-profile events held in Nebraska. Nebraska representatives from AAF also participated in “Ad Day on the Hill” in Washington, DC. Ad Day is the national club’s session to advance policies and concerns facing the advertising community at the national level. Nebraska representatives participated in briefings with the national organization and attended meetings with the state’s elected officials. Tax reform and advertising taxation was a key topic among participants.

  • As a reminder, the Nebraska Legislative session will last 90 legislative days and is tentatively scheduled to adjourn June 2.

The Legislative Issues Committee will continue to follow national issues, the State’s Unicameral Update and local news stories pertinent to advertising, communications and public relations industries and report on further developments in future issues of AdMuse.
