States Enact New Privacy Laws

As you know, multiple states have passed privacy laws in the first half of 2023. As a resource for AAF members, our partners at Venable and Privacy for America have created this document outlining the major provisions of each of the newly enacted state laws. These new laws are in addition to already existing privacy requirements in many states and add to the increasing complexity and challenges encountered by businesses and other organizations as they navigate the legal environment, and further underscores the need for a single national privacy law as supported by the AAF.

State Privacy/Compliance Webinar

For those interested in learning more about state privacy laws, Venable will be hosting an in-depth and compliance-oriented webinar on Wednesday, July 19, 1:00 PM–2:00 PM ET and has invited AAF members to register.

The panel will discuss the latest on privacy happenings at the state level, including newly passed state privacy laws in Iowa, Indiana, Montana, Florida, Washington, Tennessee, and others. Of note, Tennessee is the first state to enact a privacy law that explicitly requires a written privacy program that “reasonably conforms” to the NIST Privacy Framework: A Tool for Improving Privacy Through Enterprise Risk Management. During the panel, you will learn how your organization can leverage the NIST Privacy Framework to build a robust privacy program to meet your compliance obligations.

Small and Medium Size Business Survey Participants Needed

Privacy for America is looking for participants for survey research designed to help better understand online advertising by small and medium size enterprises (SMEs). They hope to understand and (if possible) measure impacts to SME advertising that would result from limits on the availability of audience data, whether caused by platform requirements like Apple’s ATT or cookie deprecation, or legislation that would impose requirements limiting data collection and use (such as opt-ins for collection and use of certain data categories).

If you are, or know of, a small advertiser, agency or publisher who would like to participate in this research project, please contact Clark Rector ASAP at crector@aaf.org.
