Omaha’s Creative Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary

“Hold onto your Butts!”  – Samuel L. Jackson, Jurassic Park

Back in 1993, velociraptors terrified filmgoers in Jurassic Park, Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You topped the Top 40, and snagging the latest VHS movie release at the nearest Blockbuster store was gold.

More importantly, it was the year the Creative Center, college of art & design, began classes.

The 2018-2019 school year marks the 25th anniversary of Omaha’s Creative Center, college of art & design.

The Creative Center offers two degrees in graphic design: a two-year Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS), and a three-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). The college’s philosophy and objective has stayed the same since its beginning – providing practical education and hands-on training that benefits both the student and employer. Students work on assignments from conception to final art completing a wide range of projects similar to those they will receive in the business world.

Graphic design has gone through major changes since 1993, especially in computers and technology. Laptops loaded with the latest software create stunning images and graphics. The smartphone was introduced and became the technological juggernaut which has forever changed the way everyone works, plays, communicates, entertains, commutes, and conducts business.

“One of the biggest changes I’ve seen – a print project that took five creatives and craftsman to complete is now created and produced by one graphic designer, and it’s a lot faster,” said Ray Dotzler, President of the college. “I’ve had large, expensive equipment from my studio that ended up in a dumpster because it became obsolete due to better technology. And there’s more radical changes coming with AI innovation.”

However, one thing has stayed the same – the need for good designers.

The college has planned an informal kick-off party for the students, staff and faculty later this month, with lots of flashback trivia fun, which may, or may not, include questions about velociraptors, VHS tapes, and Blockbuster.
