Student Member Spotlight | Jane Wanek

Graphic Designer. Social Media Intern. Student Ambassador.

Jane Wanek anticipates graduating from UNL as a Graphic Design major in December 2024. Looking to her future, she has already gained valuable work and networking experience toward her goal of being a graphic designer, while pursuing her interest in package design.

Wanek considers it a privilege to have been a Student Ambassador with AAF Nebraska for the On Brand Conference and an AdVenture+ event. “Through these experiences, I’ve had the ability to network with dozens of people who I never would have met. I have made so many friends in the industry who have been so helpful. These opportunities have helped me step into the world of advertising.”

Under the direction of Jen Landis, Second Lieutenant Governor of AAF District 9 representing AAF Nebraska, she enjoys serving as a Graphic Design, Social Media, and Administrative Intern with JCL Productions. “The role I have includes content development, social outreach, and various graphic design tasks for Landis’ book “Skip the Bad Songs.”

Prior to her current role, Wanek was an intern last year at the Biological Systems Engineering department on UNL’s East Campus. She was in charge of designing social media graphics, wall murals, and other print deliverables.

JUNIOR HIGH DISCOVERY

During her high school junior year, she enrolled in her first graphic design course under the direction of Blair Haynes. “I quickly fell in love with it, and immediately knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I created my business, Jane Kimball Designs, and began selling my own line of products as well as offering design services.”

In 2021, she earned the opportunity to create custom vinyl stickers for KD Designs in Downtown Lincoln. Wanek was able to use her own artwork and photography, seeing the success of those designs which she described as an amazing feeling. Since then, she has created customized logos and products for individuals, businesses, and organizations, including 361 Fishing, Rockport Center for the Arts, and the Nebraska State Fair, learning firsthand that creating product designs and selling items is rewarding.

FUTURE CREATIVE DREAM

She envisions her dream job at a design studio like Pentagram. She would also love working as a brand designer for a large company through a design or advertising agency.

Wanek has planned ahead, creating her current and future work goals in a clear direction. Follow her on Instagram @janekimballdesigns and look at her Behance profile https://www.behance.net/janewanek.
